What is depression?

Depression is a common mental health condition characterized by persistent negative thoughts or feelings that can have a serious impact on daily function. While it is normal to feel sad at times, some key differentiators of a depressive disorder include:

  1. You have experienced symptoms every day for at least two weeks.
  2. Your negative thoughts are typically about yourself. Common examples are thinking, “I am a burden” or “I am worthless.”
  3. While it is possible for a stressful event to trigger the onset of depression, depression is typically not caused by one event such as the loss of your job or a breakup.

The severity of depression symptoms can range from mild to severe. While medical professionals and researchers continue to learn more about depression, what remains unchanged is that even the most severe cases can be managed with the right tools.

Signs and Symptoms of Depressive Disorders

How do you know if you have depression? If you are wondering if you have depression, you should speak with your primary care doctor or a mental health professional because if something doesn’t feel right, you’re probably correct! You are the best judge of how you are feeling.

In the meantime, there are a number of signs and symptoms that you can look for to understand if you have depression. Depression symptoms are generally consistent on a daily basis and are unlikely to improve on their own. They will typically worsen until treated, so it’s best to seek help right away. If you have a depressive disorder, you will likely experience at least two of the following symptoms:

Treatment Resistant Depression Rapid City

  • Suicidal thoughts – this alone is enough to diagnose depression
  • Negative thoughts about oneself
  • Loss of interest in things you once enjoyed
  • Sudden lack of motivation
  • Feeling empty
  • Oversleeping or difficulty sleeping
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Feeling detached from others
  • Feeling restless – pacing, fidgeting, etc.

Note: Suicidal thoughts alone are enough to diagnose depression. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, seek help immediately. At Manlove Brain and Body Health, we offer the only FDA-approved treatment for suicidal ideation. Ketamine/esketamine (Spravato) is a powerful depression medication that can provide immediate relief from suicidal thoughts. Ketamine is an immediate solution for short term relief that is typically followed by TMS, VNS, antidepressant medications, or psychotherapy for long term relief.

Causes

Depression may be caused by:

  • A lack of serotonin
  • Atrophy of the brain
  • Genetic factors
  • Hormone changes
  • Physical health problems affecting the brain, nervous system or hormones
  • Unhealthy lifestyle such as poor sleep, nutrition, inactivity, or drug/alcohol abuse

What is treatment resistant depression?

For 1 in every 3 depression patients, common antidepressant medications do not provide relief for their depressive symptoms. Patients who have tried two or more antidepressant medications and have not felt an improvement in mood are defined as “treatment resistant”.

Our team is able to help patients with any level of depression, and our clinicians specialize in treating the most severe cases of depression. We offer hard-to-find treatment methods that work differently than traditional psychiatric interventions. If your depression treatment is not working, we can help you get the relief you need.

Patient Story: TMS for Treatment Resistant Depression

Here is a recent patient’s experience in successful recovery from TRD:

My husband has suffered from depression for approximately 25 years but was able to keep it under control with medication until 2016. Our life was turned upside down at that time. At the time he was working as a heavy equipment operator. He finally had to quit his job, there were days he could not get out of bed let alone go to work.

He tried several different depression meds with no avail. He also tried counseling and was admitted to the psychiatric unit a couple times. He had no quality of life at all. He just kept saying he wanted to go to sleep and not wake up. He would promise me he would never harm himself but the worry was always in the back of my mind. Every day as I would leave for work I wondered what I would come home to. I would call him many times throughout the day checking on him and if he wouldn’t answer I would at times go home from work to check on him. There were days I wouldn’t even go to work for fear of leaving him alone.

When we felt all our options were up, we heard about Dr. Manlove’s TMS treatment. When I say that this treatment made a world of difference it is an understatement. My husband got his life back!! He now enjoys doing the things he used to do. I got my husband back. My boys got their dad back. Our granddaughters got their grandpa back. He still has down days and days he just doesn’t feel good mentally, but he definitely has come a long way.

I can honestly say that Dr. Manlove and Mandy saved his life. We would definitely recommend TMS treatment for anyone fighting this terrible illness.
